The Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery recognizes the life of Barbara Bush with an informal photograph by Diana Walker taken in 1989. The portrait, which shows the former first lady on the White House grounds with her springer spaniel, Millie, by her side, was installed a day after her death, on Wednesday April 18, in the museum’s In Memoriam space, on the first floor, and will be on view through Sunday, April 29.

The National Portrait Gallery is part of the Donald W. Reynolds Center for American Art and Portraiture at Eighth and F streets N.W., Washington, D.C. It is open daily from 11:30 am to 7:00 pm. Admission is free.
