Free guide to finding email headers rounds out SuretyMail's free resources for end users

BOULDER, CO - SuretyMail, a leading email deliverability service, has added a new free resource to the well-used 'Resources' section of their public website. The new "How to Find Your Full Email Headers in AOL, Yahoo, Gmail, Hotmail, Outlook, Mozilla, Apple Mail and More!" helps users find their full email headers (as well as explains what they are, and why you may need to find them).

It is one of many resources available on the SuretyMail website, which includes resources on blacklists, email policy standards, and a number of other topics dealing with the dual coin-sides of spam and email deliverability.

By providing this new list of detailed instructions, users are now easily able to find, copy, and paste their full headers, which are often requested by organizations when reporting spam, according to Anne P. Mitchell, CEO of ISIPP, providers of SuretyMail.

"A close examination of email headers is one of the best ways to identify spammers," Mitchell said. "It is vitally important that users are able to find this information and pass it on to the appropriate entities, which is precisely why SuretyMail decided to offer this free tutorial to finding full headers on our website."

Email headers are listed at the top of messages, above the body of the email. In shortened form, which is how they appear to most users, they contain information like the email's subject, sender, and recipient, as well as the date on which it was sent.

However, the abbreviated headers most users see mask a long list of data and coding that reveals more detailed information about the email in question, which email programs use to identify, sort, and deliver email. Email applications also use headers to filter and block messages from certain senders, like known spammers.

To try to circumvent these blocks and filters, spammers will falsify information in their headers to make it appear as if their messages are being sent from a legitimate sender. That is why when a user reports receiving unwanted spam, the agency to whom they are reporting it will usually ask for copies of the full headers.

As the guide explains, email headers are like plane tickets: they reveal facts about the email and the inbox to which it is being sent, much like a plane ticket reveals information about a traveler and his destination. If the email header has falsified information, it will often be filtered out before it arrives to a user's inbox, just as a traveler will be stopped by authorities if he provided false information to a booking agent, never arriving to his destination. But if the spam slips by the filters, the entities through which the email was sent can still be traced, and often the spammer themselves can be traced, by analyzing the headers.

The fact that headers play such a significant role in email deliverability is one reason why businesses often enlist the help of an email accreditation service, who can help make sure that a company's headers, among other things, are in line with email best practices, which in turn signifies to ISPs that the company's email is legitimate and solicited.

In SuretyMail's newest resource, specific instructions for finding full headers are provided for the following webmail providers and email clients: Gmail, Hotmail, AOL, Yahoo, Excite Webmail, Outlook (and it's older versions), Outlook Express, Mozilla, and Apple Mail, with more being added by request
