The adverse effects of complacency in the workplace are serious, especially in the OSH community. And often leaders believe they must push employees to try harder or care more to overcome complacency and get better results.

But that approach creates the opposite effect.

Gayle Lantz interviews Sharon Lipinski, founder and CEO of Habit Mastery Consulting, who explains complacency is a “relentless biological drive”…a byproduct of habit.

More about Sharon Lipinski:

Sharon works with corporations on leveraging the habits to ensure desired business outcomes. She has done extensive research on habits and complacency related to business and employee behaviors.

Sharon is a certified Gamification for Training Developer, speaker, and TV personality. Author of “365 Ways to Live Generously: Simple Habits for a Life That’s Good for You and for Others”, a daily book that helps people create the habits that will get them healthy in body, mind, and spirit.

Sharon holds a Guinness World Record for the Longest Line of Toothbrushes—3.5 miles! The charity event (2019) collected 55,000 toothbrushes and 17,000 tubes of toothpaste for Colorado children. As founder of the non-profit Change Gangs, Sharon raised more than $100,000 for charity.

Her award winning articles have appeared in a variety of industry publications. She has delivered more than 200 trainings and helps organizations increase their targeted safety behavior by up to 150%.

Listeners will gain ideas about how to increase awareness and put desired habits into practice for themselves and those they lead.

This episode covers:

  • Misconceptions about complacency
  • What habits really are and how they work–how to create and break habits
  • Why habits themselves are not necessarily good or bad
  • Complacency related to C-Suite leaders (e.g., The need to create strategic pauses – “Anti-habit habits”)
  • What leaders can do to manage complacency (e.g., Ask, “What can be taken off their plate?)
