Last week BBC LA correspondent Peter Bowes asked me to join him and Rhod Sharp on the BBC 5 Live show to talk about the recent deluge of advice about the perfect morning routine.

Ice baths, 10k’s, and kale smoothies before 5 am anyone?

We spoke for 30 minutes about why input overload has led to an explosion of poorly informed advice pushing the one miracle magical way you simply MUST start your day for your business and life to be successful.

Of course, I shared how it was all rubbish.

Because CEOs never have the same demands every day, week, or month throughout the year. Product launches, investment rounds, earnings calls, or board commitments all create peaks and troughs of demands. Which calls for a variety of routines.

Just because 4 am spin classes and ice baths work for your fellow executive doesn’t mean it has to work for you. Different people have peak productivity at different times. It’s ok to lie in and be a night owl.

Because following the same routine 365 days a year can actually stifle your creativity. I explore this further in my next book Rapid Growth, Done Right: Lead, Influence and Innovate for Success, Kogan Page, May 2020.

Because it is ok to experiment and adopt what works and throw out what doesn’t.

If you want to hear the full conversation from my BBC interview it starts at 01:36 here.

Wishing you a perfect morning however you decide to start it.

Dedicated to growing your business,

Val
