"American firearm owners can commend the Trump White House for its talking points on the Las Vegas shooting reportedly urging Republicans to reject new gun control laws," John M. Snyder said here today.

The Washington Post and New York Times have named Snyder the "dean" of Washington gun lobbyists.

"The White House paper, as reported Tuesday by the Washington Examiner, is most needed and most welcome," Snyder said.  "After news broke about the murder in Nevada of scores of victims and the wounding of hundreds of others, many of the usual suspects in the media and politics, generally Democrats went off half-cocked in demanding the imposition of more gun controls on our law-abiding citizens.

"The anti-gun nut cakes in the media and politics have to be straightened out, and the issuance of the talking points is a step in the right direction."

The document notes President Donald Trump welcomes "a reasoned and well-informed debate on public safety," but maintains the Second Amendment "is a key constitutional right that is meant to protect people's freedoms."

It points out that new gun control laws "won't stop a mad man committed to harming innocent people" but "will curtail the freedoms of law-abiding citizens."

It urges Republicans to proclaim in answering calls for increased gun control that:

-"We've seen terrorist attacks committed with knives, by people driving cars into

               crowds, and hijacking airplanes."

-"We've had examples where concealed carry has allowed people to protect

themselves and stop a mass shooting in its tracks, such as last month in a                       church in Texas."

-"More laws on the books may not work.  The problem in these cities isn't too      few gun laws."

-"We welcome a reasoned and well-informed debate on public safety and our     constitutional freedoms, but we reject the false choice that we can't have both."

Snyder said, "The usual suspects, the nut cakes, are trying to use public reaction to Vegas against freedom.  They are trying to put tremendous public pressure on President Trump, on Republicans and on freedom-loving American citizens generally to cave in to demands for more gun control.

"Instead, let's unite against them as never before.  Let us continue our promotion of universal recognition of state approved concealed carry."

A practicing Catholic, Snyder has been named "a champion of the right of self-defense" by the Washington Times, the "gun dean" by Human Events, and the "senior rights activist in Washington" by Shotgun News.  The Trace designated him a power broker.

He holds AB and MA degrees in government from Georgetown University.  He has been an NRA magazine editor and official of the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms and Second Amendment Foundation.  He directs Telum Associates, LL.C, and serves on boards of NACOP, Council for America, and American Federation of Police and Concerned Citizens.
