Financial infidelity is often linked to sexual infidelity, according to infidelity expert Ruth Houston, who is offering a free tip sheet with 9 telltale signs of financial infidelity. 

Houston, a New York-based infidelity expert who has been researching infidelity for over 20 years says,  "It's interesting to note that the CreditCards.com financial infidelity survey, like previous studies on financial infidelity, makes no reference to the connection between financial infidelity and sexual infidelity, even though the two are often linked.  My research indicates that financial infidelity often accompanies sexual infidelity."

Houston, the founder of InfidelityAdvice.com observes, "If both parties in a marriage or committed relationship have freely shared financial information in the past, and one party (usually it's the man) suddenly becomes secretive about money matters or begins withholding information about spending habits, it's usually a sign of sexual infidelity. 

The CreditCards.com survey which found financial infidelity to be far more common than people realize, also found that in 2 out of 3 relationships, the man is more likely than the woman to be guilty of financial infidelity.   . 

Men Often Resort to Financial Infidelity to Hide Extramarital Affairs

Houston, who is frequently called on by the media to comment on popular infidelity issues in the news explains, "A cheating husband will often resort to financial infidelity in order to conceal the fact that he's spending money on his mistress. Affairs cost money. He's not going to be forthcoming about the fact that he's using family funds to finance his extramarital affair.  If he's wining and dining the 'Other Woman', buying her gifts and paying for hotel rooms, he's going to be less than honest about how his money is being spent."

Wives Often Resort to Financial Infidelity in Preparation for a Divorce

Regarding woman and financial infidelity, Houston says, "If a wife suspects her husband of cheating on her, or has discovered that he's having an affair, she will often resort to financial infidelity in order to protect herself and the children in the event of a divorce."

Houston also states that when a spouse or significant other knows what to look for, it's relatively easy to find evidence of financial infidelity. Financial Deception Can Be a Sign of Other Problems

According to Ruth Houston, financial deception may be just the tip of the iceberg.  Houston cautions, "Unfortunately most people don't take financial infidelity as seriously as they should and that could be a grave mistake.  While financial infidelity may not always indicate sexual infidelity, it usually indicates a problem of some type.  It could be a communication problem between the couple, a credit problem, financial difficulties, a problem like gambling or substance abuse (drugs or alcohol), a trust issue, or some other problem involving the person who suddenly becomes secretive about his or her financial affairs.

Houston warns that financial deception may indicate other types of deception, as well, saying, "A person who is dishonest with their spouse or significant other about financial matters, may be dishonest about other important things, too.  In almost every case, the situation warrants further investigation."
