The Federal Reserve today announced they were raising the benchmark interest rates by another 3/4 of a percentage point. They also indicated that higher rates in the future will be forthcoming.

Greg Womack, of Womack Investment Advisers located in Edmond, OK, says: "In an effort to curb inflation, the Fed has been raising rates aggressively this year. At the end of the day, they are basically imposing a slow-down in the economy, and creating higher borrowing cost for businesses and consumers." A higher interest rate environment has the potential to negatively impact consumers spending, and business profits; which could end up negatively affecting stock prices. "Investors would be prudent to review their portfolio in light of recent Fed actions, and position for the new era of higher inflation and higher interest rates", added Womack.
