I know. That sounds crazy coming from someone who built a leadership model around emotional intelligence, but hear me out. I had a client who was so empathetic she couldn't hold anyone accountable. An employee missed a deadline, but she was going through a divorce, so it got excused. Another employee was underperforming, but they had anxiety, so the bar got lowered. She thought she was being compassionate. She was actually enabling mediocrity. Her team didn't love her for it. They resented her because the inconsistency was demoralizing. Demoralizing because standards had quietly disappeared and because empathy had replaced leadership.Empathy is understanding how someone feels (putting yourself in their shoes). Compassion is understanding how they feel AND doing what's actually best for them...even when it's uncomfortable. Sometimes what's best for someone is honest feedback. This includes a hard conversation or a consequence they earned (sometimes both). If your empathy prevents you from doing those things, you're not protecting your people. You're protecting yourself from discomfort.
