I've heard it whispered in boardrooms, offices, cubicles, and muttered in hallways. "They're a diversity hire." The implication is always the same: not really qualified. Got the job because of identity. Doesn't fully belong. Let me say directly: That is a lie, and it reveals far more about the person saying it than the person being described.If someone was hired, they were qualified. Full stop. What "diversity hire" actually means is that an organization recognized its own bias and tried to correct it. The problem isn't the hire. The problem is the culture that greets them with suspicion instead of support. These candidates are held to higher standards. Required to prove themselves more. And when they succeed, it's "despite" their background. When they struggle, it's "because" of it. It's a rigged game. If you're going to hire diverse candidates, commit to it. Mentor them.
