Founded 40 years before the U.S., Georgetown was established as a tobacco port town in Maryland in 1751—275 years ago this year. Also, this year, our country is celebrating 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence. July 4, 2026 will include lots of festivities around the country, with D.C. being one of the major sites for honoring America’s Semiquincentennial. Learn more about America’s 250th events here. This year, The Georgetowner is excited to honor this momentous time in history with stories, features and photo essays commemorating 275 years of the great neighborhood we call home and the country we live in.
