Total of 3,600 online registrants were a part of the spectacular CPA Canada's webinar earlier today. CPA Canada supports the Canadian accounting profession as an established national organization.

Calgary, AB, Career planning is forefront with economic uncertainty and the enMasse exodus of Baby Boomers from the workforce. The Canadian job market is reflective of North American uncertainty and leads many to ask what steps they need to plan their career.

Loreen Sherman a Management Consultant with Star-Ting Incorporated presented three scenarios to answer this relevant question. Her role is to provide strategic advice to executives in executive coaching and with over 30 years of business experience she provided strategies to help navigate each stage of career planning.

The strategies of personal, group and organizational inspection led to an online question and answer period that was thoughtful and reflective of the questions people in career transition have.

For some, the questions of how to get the career they trained for was the motivator that led them to the webinar. Others were in transition and wanted to know how to overcome silo mentality. Many on the call were Baby Boomers getting ready to exit.

Career planning is varied and Sherman suggested many practical tips such as the four steps important to plan a strong career. De-cluttering was one of the goals suggested to reclaim the working space and make time management more possible. Sherman shared tactics to double-up time. One of the ways was to double-up resources by scheduling appointments back-to-back.

Practical, relevant and implementable strategies in career planning make the journey more enjoyable and the desired end outcome more attainable. However, Sherman cautions that "even with the best planning, sometimes unforeseen restrictions apply and issues cannot be overcome".

Q: Do you have any practical advice when actively seeking new career opportunities to move forward while you are currently employed?

A: You should not disclose to your current employer the fact you are seeking another position because the risk of losing a promotion increases if the current employer sees you leaving. This is generally advisable because your employer is likely to want loyalty and permanency in those hired. When you hold a position you have more leverage than those unemployed. Learn how to use your leverage with career planning development programs and hire a management consultant to advise you further.

Finding a mentor or a consultant is daunting to many. Sherman advises that you look for a subject matter expert to help refine certain qualities or you look for someone to guide you through multiple transitions. Sherman knows that the objectivity the consultant brings into the career planning helps reduce stress and worry. Sherman feels that finding a mentor is like finding a special personality who cares to develop your vision and influence. Career planning makes a difference.
