A few weeks ago, our friend Jonathan Robert uploaded this video of his wife, Jaqueline Paquin Robert, to their CrossFit company’s Facebook page.

Both Jaqueline and Jonathan have experienced coaching with us, and both have taken it to the next level and become certified in the FOM Coaching Methodology. We chatted with Jaqueline to find out what mindset was required to accomplish her incredible achievement.

How did you get into CrossFit?
We lost Jonathan’s father and had Nico (our youngest) in the same year. Jonathan was gaining weight rapidly from the stress and grief he was experiencing. I really wanted to get my health back too. So Jonathan reached out to a CrossFit gym an hour away. We had already started eating a Paleo diet, and CrossFit went hand in hand with that lifestyle.

We quickly fell in love with the sport; it’s very addictive. You become amazed by just how much your body is capable of doing. About a year later, we got certified and opened our own gym, CrossFit Haze.

What made you want to work on chest to bar pull-ups?
It’s important that my children see me struggle and then succeed. The chest to bar pull-up was one of those things. I used to believe that I would never be strong enough to do one.

What challenges did you encounter and how did you do it?
I had to learn how to properly move my hips and move my entire body in a coordinated way with enough speed to hit the bar. I had to scale down my chest to bars and with the help of my coach, I eventually began to get the timing right. Then I just kept practicing. This video is the result of continuously working on technique.

What mindset is required to accomplish something like this?
The thinking that helped me was: ‘I can’t do this yet, but the harder I try, the closer I get to achieving my goal.’

For me, mindset has everything to do with it.

In the beginning, I failed way more than I succeeded. I needed to work on being OK with being a beginner and getting coached no matter what my skills were. Yes, I did stumble and yes, I occasionally fell short of personal expectations. But I just continued to believe in myself.

Here’s the thing… Whether you believe you can or believe you can’t, you’re right. It’s that exact reason that once someone achieves something that they previously deemed as difficult, they can achieve it over and over again afterwards.

But it also takes a supportive community and great coaching. That is what we focus on at CrossFit Haze. Everyone cheers you on and pushes you to be the best you can be. This helps tremendously as sometimes, that extra push is all it takes to nail that new personal record. If other people believe in you, you are bound and determined to show them that they are right.
