In: Scheele’s Market Gets 4-Month Reprieve
The landmark Scheele’s Market — the?130-year-old?grocery store at 1331 29th St. NW — set to close at the end of July, has received an extension to Nov. 30, the end date of its original lease. Store owner Daniel Hong will now vacate the space just days after Thanksgiving.
“Mr. Peabody [the property owner] told me I could stay until Nov 30,” Hong told The Georgetowner, which named him a 2024 Georgetowner of the Year?for his optimism and work ethic.
Georgetowner John Lindsay is spearheading a campaign to save Scheele’s. His website, savescheelesmarket.com,?urges residents to sign an online form, showing their support for the effort to find a buyer who will keep Scheele’s operating.

In: Krewe Eyewear
New Orleans-born Krewe Eyewear has popped up in a former cannabis shop space at Wisconsin Ave. NW.
The company tells us: “Inspired by the endless diversity of life around us, we infuse that same creative energy and spirit into every pair of our exceptional, hand-crafted frames — giving you the freedom to #DoYou and, of course, enjoy the sun.”
Stirling Barrett, founder & creative director of Krewe, adds: “When people imagine New Orleans, their vision of the city is grounded in the past. Nobody thinks of it as a modern, design-oriented place. And I thought I could change that by building a fashion brand here. What began in New Orleans has grown far beyond it. While our city remains our foundation, our creative perspective is shaped by the world around us.”
Krewe also offers “second chances” on its glasses, in case you dog chews on them.
In: Suit Shop at Book Hill
Now open at 1655 Wisconsin Ave. NW, Suit Shop touts itself as “the premiere destination for affordable, size- and gender-inclusive, and yours-to-keep suiting. Made for everybody and every occasion SuitShop offers the first and only coordinating collection for men, women, nonbinary individuals, and kids.”
“Our brand was born out of Co-founder Jeanne’s (not-so-great) experience suiting up her own wedding group in rental tuxedos. Going through the hassle-filled, expensive, and ill-fitting rental process, she was sure there must be a better option out there—but there wasn’t.
“Jeanne’s background in fashion design inspired her to create a smarter suit solution herself. With the spark of an idea for the company, she partnered with childhood best friend Diana, graduate of MIT’s Sloan School of Management, to create SuitShop. Together, they set out to change the industry.”
