More than 200 Georgetowners gathered at Georgetown Veterinary Hospital on M Street to celebrate the release of Dr. Lee Morgan’s new book, “Four Thousand Paws—Caring for the Dogs of the Iditarod: A Veterinarian’s story.”

Morgan has been a volunteer veterinarian for the famed Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race in Alaska since 2012, and his book details the connection and commitment needed to keep the competing canines healthy throughout the race.

Guests were treated to a selection of wine and food while photos taken of the Iditarod played out on the wall. Morgan’s collection of race paraphernalia was displayed throughout to include his heavy patched parka, which will soon be on display along with Balto at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History.

The book has been well received, earning praise from the Wall Street Journal, Kirkus Reviews, Publishers Weekly and many readers.

The March 14 book signing was a family affair with wife Kris and son Spencer busy greeting guests and selling books. Humphrey, Georgetown Veterinary Hospital’s official greeter dog, played host to the many human and canine attendees.

“I am incredibly touched that so many people came out tonight,” said Morgan. “We are lucky to have so many wonderful clients.”

Georgetown Veterinary Hospital will be moving its location to 3251 Prospect St. NW ,Suite 100 — on the ground level of Georgetown Court — later this spring.
