Known as “The Big Boom,” the annual Independence Day celebration at Great Meadow in The Plains — about 50 minutes from Georgetown, off Exit 31 on I-66 West — is Virginia’s signature fireworks show. Gates open at 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 4.
With easy parking, the event draws over 10,000 visitors, who are welcome to bring blankets, folding chairs, coolers, games and other items to add to the festivities. There is an array of food vendors and guests may also bring their own food and beverages.
“The Big Boom brings together families, friends and neighbors from across the region for an evening that honors our nation’s history while creating new traditions,” said Great Meadow Foundation Executive Director Cindy Jeffery. “With our expanded drone show, fireworks and family entertainment, this year’s event will be the biggest and most memorable Big Boom yet.”

In addition to the fireworks, the event features: hundreds of synchronized drones that will paint patriotic images across the night sky in a dazzling aerial spectacle; hometown music favorite and “American Idol” Top 10 finalist Mike Parker; a marketplace featuring local artisans, unique retailers and food vendors; the Flying Circus, featuring vintage aircraft, parachute jumpers and breathtaking aerial stunts; a climbing wall for adventurous kids and kids at heart; a family-friendly petting zoo and pony rides; and lawn games and carnival attractions.
