This vibrant pastel by painter Paul Lucien Maze (1887-1979), depicting a horse race with riders, horses and spectators, sold for multiples of its high estimate. The setting is the Trundle in West Sussex. Known as the last of the Post-Impressionists, the French-born Maze, who became a naturalized British subject, painted many scenes of sporting events, especially horse racing and sailing.

This framed screenprint by Andy Warhol (1928-1987), a portrait of actress Marilyn Monroe, was sold by Christie’s as part of the estate of Dr. Giuseppe Rossi. The surgeon became famous for saving Warhol’s life after the Pope of Pop was shot in 1968 at his studio, the Factory. Produced around 1967, the print, a gift to Rossi from the artist, is signed in pencil.

This women’s Art Deco manual-wind wristwatch from Movado is made of 14-karat white gold. Its platinum band is set with diamonds and blue sapphires. The piece sold for more than twice its high estimate during Weschler’s Metro Online auction on May 19.

Originally owned by American diplomat and Soviet expert Charles “Chuck” E. Bohlen and Avis Thayer Bohlen, this canvas library trunk, dated between circa 1914 and the 1930s, sold for nearly three times its high estimate. Displaying the Louis Vuitton gold label and that of New York retailer Arthur Gilmore, the interior retains its felted lining, shelves and straps.

John Lennon Alphabet Poem from the Bag One Series?

A framed lithographic print of “Alphabet Poem,” written by John Lennon (1940-1980) in 1969 and published in his “Bag One” series the following year, sold for over $4,000. The print is signed and numbered in pencil. In the poem, Lennon, soon to quit the Beatles, pairs each letter of the alphabet with a playful, sometimes absurd phrase, few of which begin with the assigned letter (“S is for pancake or whole wheat bread”).
