Pool at Athletic Society Westlake Village

On the border between Thousands Oaks and Westlake Village, just north of Los Angeles in Ventura County, the Athletic Society is the midst of renovating an existing gym into a state-of-the-art fitness facility. Thousand Oaks has been the subject of worldwide headlines for all the wrong reasons, a mass shooting and destructive wildfires, and as the area continues mourning and begins cleaning up and rebuilding the Athletic Society Westlake Village offers a place of healing and rejuvenation. A facility that has been home to a number of fitness centers is taking on a whole new persona with General Manager Richard Weiss running the show.

A 25-year veteran of the fitness industry, raised in Queens, New York, Weiss is proud of the way the fitness center is shaping up and gave me a personal tour after I wandered in, just for a look see, the day before Thanksgiving. Within an hour I joined the club because the atmosphere, which always starts with good leadership, oozed with the aura of positive energy and growth. I also liked the long hours of operation that allowed for my strange work schedule; 4:30 am to 11 pm Monday thru Thursday, 4:30 am to 9:00 pm Friday and 6:00 am to 8:00 pm on the weekends.

"We are committed to creating a place that has everything to offer at every level of fitness or rehabilitation. It is astounding what the body can achieve when given the right drive and guidance, miracles are taking place all the time and many with little or no help from traditional medicine. Our bodies can work wonders and this Athletic Society location is being designed for all ages, abilities and situations," says Richard Weiss.

For the last nine-months Athletic Society Westlake Village has been a furious process of renovation and it is quickly approaching completion. Just off the 101 Freeway at the Hampshire exit, at 2400 Willow Lane, the parking area is spacious at this stand alone building in the foothills adjacent to the freeway exit. Walking in the lobby area is spacious and welcoming, with a large check-in desk topped by massive rectangular skylight. Directly to the right is a lounge-dining area with three massive TV screens, seven tables, a bar area and a six power outlet work station/counter complimented by high-speed Wi-Fi.

Next to the check-in area is a good sized Kids Club daycare center and just beyond large glass windows, stenciled with the AS logo, that frame a huge four lane swimming pool  (see photo above). Outfitted with a new filter and heating system, the water is the perfect temperature and each lane can easily accommodate multiple swimmers. During aquatic classes two lanes are still open for swimming. Lit by skylight during the day and ambient lighting at night, one can enter from the front or the adjacent and spacious locker rooms. Self-serve combo locks obviate the onerous task of bringing a lock and amenities like lotion, hair spray, antiperspirant, towels and shower products are available.

The left wing has a rejuvenation center with Hyrdro-Massage, Tanning Beds, Wellness Pods and Fit3D Body Scan. Across the hall a massive new group fitness room is almost completed, replacing the existing one next to the machine and weight room in the right wing. Next to the new group fitness room are twin hardwood basketball courts where leagues are played and down another hallway the a room for cycling classes. Refrigerated eucalyptus soaked hand towels are available for use during workouts.

The right wing'a massive free and machine weight room, with a wide-variety of cardio devices, contains the latest and newest equipment. It will get bigger when it expands into the old group class room that is adjacent to two new small group rooms dedicated to Pilates and Yoga classes. One group of bikes has a nice view of the foothills of Thousands Oaks from a slate of windows on the south side.

In short order the Athletic Society Westlake Village will be completed and it will one of the nicest fitness clubs in the area. Another location is in the West Valley suburb of Canoga Park at 22235 Sherman Way.
