The September 2019 issue of The International Institute of Municipal Clerks magazine published an article by keynote speaker Jan McInnis on using humor in business. It was a follow up to McInnis's keynote at their conference this past May in which she shared humor in business tips with over 1,000 conference attendees.

The article focuses on why humor is important, and offers a few practicle tips for using humor in business. Techniques such as self-depricating humor will help you make an instant connection with others, and using analogies to "say something without saying it" will liven up a dull conversation so that people listen to your message and remember it. 

McInnis cites examples of humor she's written for television and radio, including the Tonight Show monologue with Jay Leno, but she cautions that in business, you're goal isn't to be a comedian. Rather than that, your'e just trying to change the energy and grab people's attention.
