The law of unintended consequences. (Bear in mind I’ve been married for 57 years—to the same woman.)
We once had two dogs, Koufax, a white German Shepherd, and Buddy Beagle. Their spirits remain alive within my comic strip, The Adventures of Koufax and Buddy Beagle, which appears every Friday on my blog on Alanweiss.com.
One day, The Lovely Maria took our SUV to go shopping with the dogs, not unusual. On this particular day, however, she returned with the left side of her hair and clothing damp. It seems that she thought she’d save time and get the truck washed while she was out. But Koufax panicked in the automated washing equipment, jumped on her lap and stepped on the driver’s window button, lowering it during pre-rinse.
Okay, it could happen to anyone. I think.
Two weeks later, she comes home totally drenched with soap in her hair and on her shoulders.
“What the hell?” I said, jumping up.
She was determined to prove she could handle the dog (who was 90 pounds), went back to the carwash, but held Koufax’s collar tightly. He panicked again, this time standing on the console, hit his head on the ceiling and opened the automatic sunroof, this time during the suds cycle.
Pick your spots. Proving you can outwit a German Shepherd may not be worth it due to unintended consequences. And the same philosophy applies to someone who cuts you off on the road, a prospect who demands something late in the day, or a regulation that infuriates you.
I’ll debate something with my doctor, but not with someone at the department of motor vehicles when I’m trying to obtain a new registration for the car and the paperwork seems ridiculous.
Don't get frustrated, there are other ways to succeed. You just stop taking the dog to the carwash.
