
There are mythological and colloquial ramifications to “the ninth wave.” In Irish folklore it is a barrier separating this earthly world from “The Other World.” It is also a painting of a shipwreck by Ivan Aivezovsky where sailors struggle against a titanic wave on their apparently doomed ship.
But in surfing, it is considered to be the final wave in a sequence of nine, representing tremendous power and opportunity for a great ride. (The closest I’ve come to surfing is listening to The Beach Boys, of course, so what follows is not intended as gasconade.)
Here in Nantucket there are quite moderate waves (by the Jersey standards of my youth) but a very strong undertow. After just a few minutes in the water, you can find yourself 30 yards from where you entered. And you can be absolutely “wiped-out” if you try to exit with poor timing, being swept seaward as the next wave comes thundering toward you before you’ve braced yourself.
Consequently, I’ve developed a technique (after countless wipe-outs) where I await the next incoming wave, use it to gain ground toward the beach, dig my feet in to brace against the undertow, and then ride the succeeding wave up and onto the beach. If you mess this up you can be pummeled by the strong undertow of the former wave and a weak boost by a smaller incoming wave.
I think this is what resilience really is—“digging in” when something or someone is trying to drag you back, and taking advantage of the momentum of events and circumstances to push you forward. Resilience is about rebounding forward, not trying to recover from being submerged.
I’ve been pretty good and, perhaps, so have some of you, correctly judging and riding the waves of volatility and disruption. But I’ll have to ask a surfer some day: What’s it like on the ninth, ninth wave?
