A few thoughts on Father’s Day which, fortunately, no one yet has been able to ban or otherwise condemn, though I’m sure Brown University has a committee working on that.
It seems to me that the choice to have children or not is a person’s obvious right in a free society. There are no laws or requirements about “perpetuating the species” and, thankfully, many do provide for that, not out of some obligation to be fertile (despite some grandparental pressure), but out of a desire to have children.
I’m a better father than my father was, and my son is better than I (and I’d think that his son will be better than he). That’s not a requirement, of course, just my observation. We feel and observe (sometimes unfairly so) what we think we’ve lacked growing up and we attempt to compensate for it (and sometimes overcompensate for it). But in most cases, despite the hand-wringing and the garment-rending, successive generations are generally better off. (If anyone younger than I doesn’t believe that, I lived through, in my ructious youth, crises such as polio prior to vaccines, Viet Nam, the Watts riots and cities burning, and the Cuban Missile Crisis, the latter of which damn near ended all life on earth, averted only when a Russian flotilla commander denied a submarine captain’s request to launch a nuclear torpedo at an American destroyer, which would have triggered Armageddon.)
But, I digress. Perspective is everything. As Billy Joel sings in Allentown, “our fathers fought in the Second World War and we vacationed on the Jersey Shore.” Indeed, he did and we did, when we could afford it. And thank God they did.
In a bar in the lower level of the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Hong Kong an eternity ago, an otherwise worthless boss told me something of immense value: “Alan, you can’t make your kids poor.” And of course, it was that hunger that created my resilience and agility in life, for my wife and myself. So we tried our best to instill values in the kids despite the wealth—which ain't my daddy's money—and (metaphorically) refused to buy them designer backpacks for school.
I’m proud of my family. One sixteen-year-old granddaughter is in Kenya for a couple of weeks, and the other attending Syracuse University for a couple of weeks. They, like their mother and her brother, are veterans of a private school education. Their grandmother and I were in public schools working for a buck an hour to save for public universities. But just as I love my family, I’d never trade that experience. I am the avatar of the American Dream.
It made me who I am.
And I realize every day that the true motive forces behind good fathers are great wives and mothers!
