I sometimes watch golf while I read the Sunday papers, and the sportscasters constantly call some attempts “a perfect shot.” But wouldn't a “perfect shot” go into the hole? Anything less than that would be “terrific,” perhaps, or “outstanding,” but surely not perfect. If you're teeing off and land in the fairway as opposed to outside of it, the shot may be “perfect” I guess, in terms of what was desired, but then is a shot another ten yards farther “more perfect”?
What is a “perfect” business meeting? I'd suggest it has to be one where the client shakes hands on your project and initiates payment immediatley. A meeting where the client agrees to meet again, or even read your proposal, is surely “excellent,” but not “perfect.”
What's a “perfect relationship”? My wife, The Lovely Maria (TLM) tells people that our successful 58-year marriage (and 64-year total relationship) is based on celebrating the outstanding times, working through the rocky times, and liking all the “OK” times (the majority) in between the two. (I sign my cards to her, “OK Alan.” ) She once called me a “D Ticket,” alluding to the old Disneyland alphabetic passes, until I reminded her that the best ticket was the “E Ticket.” To which she replied, “Oh, right….”
The search for perfection is futile and undermines excellence, since we can never be successful enough, or win enough, or please enough. So, picture a pressure gauge where too low and too high are both terrible, but anywhere in the acceptable area is fine, healthy, and pleasing. I call the acceptable range “the feasbile set of success.” It's seldom ever a bullseye, it's almost always a range.
You're probably in it more than you realize, so give yourself some credit and take the pressure of perfection off your shoulders. Perfection undermines excellence and creates ongoing stress, which is far from perfect.

Excellence is not a skill, it's an attitude. —Ralph Marston
In order to go on living one must try to escape the death involved in perfectionism. —Hannah Arendt
Perfectionism is not a quest for the best. It is a pursuit of the worst in ourselves, the part that tells us that nothing we do will ever be good enough—that we should try again. —Julia Cameron
Europe seems a little softer, but in America it's harsh. In L.A., where I live, it's all about perfectionism. —Alanis Morissette
