 I’ve been commenting for some time that people don’t trust others’ judgment nor their own since Covid, even now a much greater continuing sociological and business threat than AI. Since I’ve written and recorded a great deal on the general neglect of self-esteem and decline in trust of one’s judgment, I’ll use this space to illustrate how organizations are accelerating the decline in our perceptions of our own power and critical thinking..
The IRS has told me that I have a refund, which I know has to be tiny, maybe because there was slightly less interest due since I filed early. But they will no longer allow me into my own, protected IRS portal without establishing still further security, including a passport or license photo, which their site refuses to accept and then simply freezes. Should I spend $5,000 of my time to capture the probably $30 or less due me? (I don’t know the amount, the government won’t tell me. My tax firm had to assure me this wasn’t a scam.)
At the bank I’ve gone to for decades, a teller who knows me quite well asked me for my license for a deposit. As my eyebrows went over my head like a cartoon character, she explained that the bank wants all ID verified and updated. Her new entries took several minutes. I asked what this would be like during “rush hour” with a line of customers. “Don’t ask,” she replied.
From hair products to dog food, TV medical ads to personal injury law, we’re confronted with yards of hard-to-read legalese which causes most of us to shrug our shoulders and buy or apply the product or service, because the warnings are overwhelming and terrifying.*
There are so many warnings (“Don’t try this at home” is the chyron under the film of a skydiver dropping perfectly from the clouds into a moving convertible), and in such difficult formats (the print was so small that for two days in a hotel I showered using shampoo instead of shower gel, having guessed at the containers) that we simply surrender to the “authority.” Current society and business and “influencers” are trying to emasculate (the word applies, you can look it up) our ability to use critical thinking skills.
Demand to know what’s going on, complain about the spammers and scammers and/or find the software that negates them. Don’t be disempowered by the sheer weight and freight of the “authorities.”
Develop, retain, and trust your judgment. And DO try this at home.
