ATI Course on Satellite Ground Systems Provides Essential Training for People Interested in Space

Satellite communications networks may depend on electronics flying high above the atmosphere—but for people interested in a space industry career, a good part of the action involves systems that never leave the Earth's surface. That's the thrust of a comprehensive course on ground systems offered by Applied Technology Institute (ATIcourses), a leading provider of classroom-based and online technical training programs for professionals in the aerospace and defense sector.

Scheduled for November 11-13, 2013, in Columbia, MD, "Ground Systems Design and Operation" will provide participants with a thorough introduction to the instruments used to control and operate spacecraft as well as the technical concepts that serve as the basis for radio transmissions between Earth and orbiting satellites. Students will learn how to operate equipment used to control satellites and gain an understanding of the techniques used to transmit radio signals via satellite efficiently and reliably. The course will be led by space industry veteran Steve Gemeny, currently Director, Advanced Programs at Syntonics, LLC. Prior to joining Syntonics, Gemeny worked for nearly a decade at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) in Laurel, MD. At APL, Gemeny served as lead ground system engineer for NASA's New Horizons mission to Pluto, heading the development of the network of hardware and software system necessary to build, test, launch and operate the first mission to explore the last planet. He was also ground station lead for the U.S. Space agency's TIMED (Thermosphere, Ionosphere, Mesosphere Energetics and Dynamics) project, launched in 2001 to explore Earth's upper atmosphere. Before APL, Gemeny worked at Orbital Sciences Corp., Mobile Telesystems Inc. and the former COMSAT Corp.
