AI is everywhere in today’s workplace. Organizations are investing heavily in tools that promise greater speed, efficiency, and productivity. Every few months another report tells us AI adoption is exploding.
Yet Gallup’s latest workplace research reveals a surprising reality: employee engagement isn’t improving.
Gallup’s research, released July 21, 2026, found that employee engagement remains stuck at just 31%, costing the U.S. economy an estimated $2 trillion annually in lost productivity.
If technology is making work more efficient, why aren’t employees becoming more engaged?
Because engagement has always been a human problem and a human opportunity.
Gallup defines employee engagement as
employees’ involvement in and enthusiasm for their work & workplace.Notice what is not in that definition, Technology.
Engagement grows through relationships, meaningful work, and leaders who create an environment where people can thrive.
AI can help us hire faster.
It can screen resumes.
It can summarize interviews.
It can answer general HR questions.
But it cannot create trust.
It cannot make a new employee feel they belong.
It cannot help a struggling manager build trust with their team.
And it cannot build a culture people don’t want to leave.
That’s why I developed
The Human Path to Retention. As organizations rushed to embrace AI, I kept coming back to one question:
What actually makes people stay? The answer wasn’t another technology. It was human connection.
The three pillars of The Human Path to Retention:
Recruiting
Retention begins before Day One. It begins the first time a candidate comes into contact with your company,
Are candidates treated like transactions…or future teammates?
Culture
Do your values live on the wall…or in daily behavior?
What are your values? Are they clearly articulated and lived?
Walk Your TalkLeadership
Managers don’t need AI to replace conversations.
They need AI to free up time for more conversations.
Leadership is not about managing projects. It’s about developing people.
Gallup’s findings shouldn’t discourage organizations from investing in AI. They should encourage organizations to invest just as intentionally in people. AI can make work faster. Human connection makes work matter. And when people feel connected…
Engagement rises.
Burnout declines.
People stay longer.
Organizations perform better.
Technology changes how we work. Human connection determines whether people want to stay.AI may help you hire faster.
