You Are Not Lazy

Dr. Patricia A. Farrell, Ph.D., licensed clinical psychologist and former researcher at Mt. Sinai Medical Center, announces the launch of The Invisible Load Series, a five-book nonfiction series addressing the psychological, neurological, and relational crisis that millions of American women are living inside without adequate language, science, or practical support.

The series launches with one title available now: You Are Not Lazy. You Are Running on Empty., the science of caregiver burnout and recovery. Books two, three, four and five, The Sandwich Has Two Sides, Stop Managing Everyone, Grief That Nobody Names and Enough Already, follow immediately to complete the arc. Available on Amazon and Draft2Digital booksellers in epub, print and audiobook (audio only on Amazon).

ABOUT THE SERIES

The Invisible Load Series addresses a gap that Dr. Farrell has observed across decades of clinical practice and research: the women most in need of science-backed support are the women least well served by the existing nonfiction market. The life-coach voice, the social media influencer playbook, and the gratitude-journal approach to serious psychological distress: none of these meet the actual level of crisis that the research documents in women who are managing households, aging parents, careers, children, and their own deteriorating well-being, often simultaneously.

Each book in the series is written at a clear, accessible reading level for the woman who is already doing everything and has no time for jargon. The voice is direct, warm, and grounded in peer-reviewed science. There are no patient anecdotes, no fictional characters to identify with, and no advice that requires a lifestyle the reader does not have.

What the series provides is what Dr. Farrell has spent her career providing to individual patients: a real explanation of what is happening, backed by research the reader can trust, delivered by someone with the credentials to speak authoritatively and the clinical experience to speak humanely.

THE FIVE BOOKS

Book One: You Are Not Lazy. You Are Running on Empty.

The Science of Caregiver Burnout and How to Come Back From It. Explains the neuroscience of chronic stress and burnout in women who carry the invisible load. Why burnout is physiological, not personal. Why willpower does not fix it, and what the research says does.

Book Two: The Sandwich Has Two Sides

How to Care for Aging Parents Without Losing Yourself. Addresses the specific crisis of the sandwich generation: women caught between aging parents and their own lives. Anticipatory grief, sibling dynamics, sustainable caregiving, and the research on caregiver health.

Book Three: Stop Managing Everyone

How to Let Other People Be Responsible for Their Own Lives. Examines the psychology of over-functioning: the unconscious pattern by which women take on emotional management of everyone around them, the neuroscience of constant social vigilance, and the research-supported path out of it.

Book Four: Grief That Nobody Names

What to Do When You Are Mourning a Life You Never Got to Live. Brings the research on ambiguous loss and disenfranchised grief to the specific losses that midlife women carry without acknowledgment: the career set aside, the self postponed, the relationships that drifted, the unlived possibilities.

Book Five: Enough Already

How to Stop Performing Competence and Start Living. The series closer. Addresses the performance of having it all together, the psychology of perfectionism in high-functioning women, and the research-backed path off the performance treadmill.

MARKET CONTEXT

The research behind The Invisible Load Series reflects a documented and underserved market. Women ages 38 to 65 are the primary caregivers for aging parents in 72 percent of American families. The terms mental load and invisible load generate more than 100,000 monthly Google searches. Caregiver burnout for the sandwich generation is a confirmed 2026 search trend on Amazon.

What does exist is a five-book series authored by a credentialed clinical psychologist and active researcher that addresses the full arc of this crisis: the burnout, the caregiving, the over-functioning, the grief, and the performance. Dr. Farrell's series fills that gap entirely.

ABOUT DR. PATRICIA A. FARRELL, PH.D.

Dr. Patricia A. Farrell is a licensed clinical psychologist, a former Alzheimer's researcher at Mt. Sinai Medical Center, and the author of multiple previous books including titles in the acclaimed GET OUT! and the WHOLLY HER series. She has spent decades studying how stress, caregiving, and emotional labor affect the health of women, and her clinical work has served thousands of patients over the course of her career.

Dr. Farrell's credentials set every book in The Invisible Load Series apart from the life-coach and influencer titles that dominate these Amazon categories.

She brings to popular nonfiction the same standards she applies to peer-reviewed research: accuracy, specificity, and a deep respect for the intelligence and the suffering of the people she is writing for.
