The 2026 White House Correspondents’ Dinner weekend unfolded with its usual swirl of high-profile pre-parties and post-parties, where media figures, celebrities and political insiders gathered across D.C. for a mix of celebration and networking. However, the festive atmosphere was abruptly shaken on Saturday night when a gunman opened fire near the security checkpoint at the Washington Hilton, prompting panic, a swift Secret Service response and the evacuation of top officials. Despite the chaos—attendees taking cover, events disrupted and the dinner ultimately cut short—no one was killed and the surrounding parties largely resumed or carried on in the aftermath, underscoring both the unease yet resilience that defined this year’s WHCD weekend.
