"Recent terrorist threats against people in Washington, D.C. underscore the need for the courts to put an end to the anti-gun shenanigans perpetrated against law-abiding citizens in the Nation's Capital," gun rights advocate John Snyder said here today.

"We commend Stephen Halbrook, attorney for Dick Heller and other plaintiffs, for pursuing this matter in federal court," he added. "People need guns for self-defense now more than ever. It is outrageous for politicians to persist in denying citizens their individual Second Amendment civil right to keep and bear arms."

A former National Rifle Association editor, Snyder is Public Affairs Director of the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms, and Treasurer of the Second Amendment Foundation. He serves on the boards of the National Association of Chiefs of Police, and the American Federation of Police & Concerned Citizens.

Early this week, Halbrook told an appeals court that the city's ban on certain firearms such as semiautomatic handguns and its cumbersome registration process violate citizens' constitutional rights.

"Law-abiding Americans must have the opportunity to get and use the guns they may need to protect their lives from maniacal Islamist terrorists," Snyder said.

"Recent news reports make this quite clear to anyone not blinded by political correctness," he added. "According to these reports, an Al Qaeda-affiliated magazine is urging individual Islamists in the United States to attack and kill as many Americans as they can in public gathering places.

"Inspire, an Internet magazine, even calls on Islamists to shoot up customers in downtown Washington, D.C. restaurants so they can murder federal workers and other Americans. The New York Daily News and The Washington Times reported this."

Snyder declared "the lesson is clear. People who work in our Nation's Capital must be able to have guns in order to stop terrorists in their tracks, to prevent the killing and massacre of innocent people.

"For years, a Washington, D.C. ordinance prohibited the acquisition of handguns by private citizens. That legal manifestation of insanity was declared an unconstitutional violation of the individual Second Amendment civil right to keep and bear arms by the United States Supreme Court. That was two years ago in its landmark District of Columbia vs. Heller decision."

Snyder charged that, "Since then, politicians, augmented by elite establishment journalists, merchants, educators and clergymen, have been dragging their feet in implementing the spirit of Heller. Now, still, with a new anti-gun law in place, citizens find it next to impossible legally to obtain and use the handguns they need to protect themselves from the Islamist threat to life.

"It's time for anti-gun laws in the District of Columbia to go by the boards so that law-abiding Americans can get, carry and use firearms to protect themselves, their families and their co-workers from Islamist nut cakes, as well as from other violent criminals. That's why Halbrook's Heller II appeal is so important."

Snyder warned "those who work against this right in Washington, D.C. and elsewhere to beware. If it so happens that people are murdered, are massacred, because politically correct elitists spoke and worked successfully to prevent citizens from getting, carrying and using self-defense guns, the blood of the innocent will be on their hands."
