Life After Layoff: Eight Tips To Survive a Layoff

By Edie Raether

  1. Identify sources of anger to resolve all negative emotions that prevent healing and creative, visionary thinking.

  2. Stop the "woulda, coulda, shoulda" attitude that anchors you to the past. Accept that the past is over and out of your control. Focus instead on the "now" with a clear action plan for change.

  3. Make your network! Leverage your time and energy by dusting off your rolodex and reconnecting with existing contacts.

  4. Resolve the co-dependent relationship you may have had with your employer and accept your situation. Accept the situation as an opportunity rather than a setback.

  5. Don't feel personally offended. Be objective and remember it's not about what happens to you, but rather what you do with it. Create personal despair or joy? The choice is yours.

  6. Seek a support system outside of your immediate circle of friends and family. People who are too close to you may only tell you what you want to hear. New insight may not be pleasant, but it can help redirect your energies and goals.

  7. Employers should be honest with employees. Lying has a negative effect and can create a feeling of mistrust.

  8. Keep in mind a poor attitude during a layoff situation, on the part of either the employee or the employer, may have a negative effect that resonates far into the future. The better you handle the situation now, the easier you will be able to reposition youself.
