John Snyder and Dan Polsby following Possenti Medallion presentation
Gun rights advocate John M. Snyder said here this morning that Dean Daniel D. Polsby of George Mason University School of Law is the American academic leader most responsible for the development and publication of scholarly studies on the history, meaning and significance of the Second Amendment.

?Just last week,? said Snyder, Chairman of the St. Gabriel Possenti Society, Inc., an international educational entity, ?it was my distinct privilege to present Dan with the Society?s Medallion of Honor.

?Dan is the leading academic champion of the individual civil right of law-abiding American citizens to keep and bear arms in the United States today. He has demonstrated his commitment to principles upon which the Society is based.?

?These days,? Snyder noted, ?there is an ongoing discussion about whether the Second Amendment to the Constitution recognizes an individual right to bear arms or a collective one. As Dan points out, there really is no such thing as a ?collective? right. All rights, by definition, are individual protections against collectivities of one sort or the other. The opponents of an individual?s right to bear arms just thought this one up as part of an attempt to get around the true meaning of the Second Amendment.?

George Mason University School of Law here in Arlington for the last couple of years has been the venue for the Firearms Law & Second Amendment Symposium hosted by Law Students for the Second Amendment along with The NRA Foundation and the NRA Civil Rights Defense Fund.

?As a legal scholar for many years and more recently as a top law school administrator,? said Snyder, ?Dan has demonstrated his commitment to principles upon which the St. Gabriel Possenti Society is based. His dedication to legal support for the right of law-abiding citizens to obtain and use handguns and other firearms for defense of human life places him squarely in the forefront of individuals eligible for this distinction.

?During his career as educator and lawyer, Dan has written significant articles and briefs in support of individuals? right to keep and bear arms. As Dean of George Mason Law School, he has maintained and developed on faculty the most distinguished and high-powered group of Second Amendment legal scholars in the country. Most recently, he joined with a number of other American legal scholars in a Brandeis Brief calling for the dismissal of a District of Columbia statute as a violation of the United States Constitution. In that case, Parker v. District of Columbia, an appellate court agreed that the D.C. law practically prohibiting handgun possession is unconstitutional. The District has indicated it will appeal that decision to the U.S. Supreme Court.?

St. Gabriel Possenti was a 19th Century Catholic seminarian who used a handgun to rescue villagers of Isola del Gran Sasso, Italy in 1860 from a gang of terrorizing renegade soldiers. He died in 1862. Pope Benedict XV canonized him in 1920.

The interdenominational Society promotes public recognition of Possenti and seeks his official designation as Patron of Handgunners. It emphasizes the historical, philosophical and theological bases for the doctrine of legitimate self-defense.

In the book, ?Gun Saint,? published by Telum Associates, LLC, Snyder details the Possenti story and recounts the history of the gun saint movement.

A former National Rifle Association magazine editor, Snyder is Public Affairs Director of the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms and Treasurer of the Second Amendment Foundation. He serves on the Boards of both the National Association of Chiefs of Police and the American Federation of Police & Concerned Citizens.
