Can the Internet be a force to connect us with our higher selves?
GLOBAL HEALTH MEDIA Dr. Meg Jordan, Global Medicine Hunter 415 785-7987 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE SAN FRANCISCO---) Spending too much time online may aggravate a host of problems—social phobia, hostility, ADHD, and could even induce withdrawal symptoms of boredom and anxiety, according to researchers from China and the U.S. While doctors express concern that hyperactive children are most at risk of Internet addiction, just about anyone would agree that primary relationships suffer when loved ones spend countless hours at the Internet gambling, watching porn, or checking email. But on Nov. 16, the Internet (which 90% of users say they can't live without) has a chance to redeem itself, and be a force that connects us with our higher selves. A group of social entrepreneurs under the company banner Wisdom of the World, will launch a web-based movement known as the "10 Days to Reach 10 Million" campaign. The viral media event is designed to inspire expressions of gratitude and reach out to those you care about during this Thanksgiving season. You can join the campaign by registering at www.10Daysto10Million.com, where you'll have the opportunity to view the first of a series of new media, mini-movies—WisdomFilms™--billed as "innertainment for human beings" Spearheaded by Emmy award-winning film composer and producer Gary Malkin, the "wisdom team" hopes to transform media into a consciousness-raising technology. "We've been fed a steady diet of negativity and violence through movies, television, video games and the news networks. Garbage in, garbage out—you know what I mean?" explained Malkin at a fundraising premiere in Berkeley, CA. To reach 10 million people in 10 days, they plan to tap into every known facet of social media sites, along with announcements to broadcast media, and public concerts. The four-minute WisdomFilm features a montage of faces dissolving into breathtaking natural scenery, while the hushed, gentle voices of luminaries such Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Nobel Peace prize winner Thich Nhat Hahn encourage viewers to recognize that you're "already connected to Source" Words like "inspire" and "heal" appear in pace with the audio. But the driving pulse behind the production is Malkin's own film score-quality music, which stimulated heart-opening, expansive feelings reported by viewers at the premiere. "When you listen to great soundtracks of favorite movies, you get caught in the upsurge of positive emotions. Just hearing the music again helps you recall what you loved so much," said one of WisdomFilm team members. If, as music therapists tell us, music can soothe and heal, can it also inspire us to "pay it forward?" And if music alone can do that, then what will awe-inspiring music, along with spoken wisdom and breathtaking visuals do for us? Malkin and company want to find out. He intends to invite scientists to study what occurs physiologically as one listens and views the images. He believes the music serves as a transport carrier of sorts, a "disarming spirit," that brings the spoken wisdom to a deeper place within the psyche and nervous system. Malkin bases that notion on feedback he has received from thousands of people who purchased his "Graceful Passages," an award-winning CD that captured inspirational messages from humanitarians with originally scored music for life's transitions. A hoped-for offshoot of this viral campaign is to establish enough awareness for WisdomFilms that they become available as an app for iPhone and iTouch, along with other platforms worldwide.. The mini-movie could offer brief moments of peace and gratitude, and serve as an open-eyed, music-driven meditation to dampen the high-tech stress we undergo from our digital obsessions. In other words, if you're going to be addicted to email, texting, and all the cool apps you can't ignore, then at least have a means for reminding yourself you're not just an extension of your cell phone or laptop. Go from a crazy existence of attention-deficit to a world of awareness-enhancement.
