South Carolina Baptists Promote Christian Civility
Charleston, SC
Monday, December 10, 2007

The campaign to restore civility to the Christian dialogue has received a major boost from the South Carolina Baptist Convention. Acting on a resolution from the Charleston Baptist Association, the oldest Baptist association in the south, which called for a specific Say Something Nice Sunday the messengers passed a resolution titled, "Unity in the Body of Christ.

After the normal whereas clauses the resolution states, "Resolved ,that we the messengers of the South Carolina Baptist Convention meeting in Florence, SC on November 13-14, 2007, do proclaim our intent to foster a climate of Christian communication that brings honor to our Lord through encouragement and love, and be it finally resolved that we encourage and support activities and programs that will help establish a positive dialogue between Christians and with non-Christians, that honors Christ"

The movement started with the First Baptist Church of Charleston that established the first Say Something Nice Sunday on June 3, 2006. First Baptist Church of Charleston is celebrating its 325th anniversary. This continues a historic tradition of inviting dialogue among diverse groups. In August of 2007 it hosted the first meeting of historian from every Baptist heritage. The conference was an unqualified success. There are materials available without charge at www.fbcharleston.org or www.mitchcarnell.net.

All denominations, churches and Christian organizations are urged to take up the issue of civil Christian dialogue and to join the movement. In 2008, Say Something Nice Sunday is June first.
