Say Something Nice Sunday Spreads to England
Charleston, SC
Wednesday, December 03, 2008
The Say Something Nice Sunday movement which has been gaining strength in the United States has made a great leap across the Atlantic to England. When the originator of the movement met volunteers from the Salvation Army in an informal Bible study on a cruise of the Panama Canal, the Salvation Army couple requested that multiple copies of the little book, Say Something Nice; Be a Lifter, be sent to them in Oxford. When he gave lapel pins, "Say Something Nice," to the wait staff on the ship, there was an enthusiastic response across the dinning room. The wait staff represents many countries.
The movement started at First Baptist Church of Charleston, South Carolina, the oldest Baptist church in the south, and has spread being adopted by many Presbyterian, Methodists, and Episcopal churches. The celebration is the first Sunday in June of each year. In 2009 it will be June seventh. Dr. Jim Austin, Executive Secretary-Treasurer of the South Carolina Baptist Convention, said, "You never know how a word fitly spoken may be powerfully used by God to brighten someone's day., to encourage someone ready to give up, to inspire one to true greatness. Speak these words to someone today"
