The decline in civility in public life and Christian life is tackled head-on in a new book, Christian Civility in an Uncivil World. The book brings together leaders from several denominations to discuss the hot button issues, but also offers a way forward.

The Rev Paul Raushenbush, associate dean of the Chapel at Princeton and grandson of the leader of the Social Gospel Movement, sets the tone in his Foreword. Dr. Jimmy Allen follows up with a practical demonstration of how different groups can work together. Dr. Richard Mouw, president of Fuller Seminary and author of the highly successful, Uncommon Decency, makes a plea for civility in the public square. The Rev. Wade Burleson makes the case for civility on the Internet. Methodist Bishop Sally Dyck describes how civility can be practiced in church conferences.

John Gehring and Alexia Kelley, with the Catholic Alliance for the Common Good, bring illustration from public life to make their arguments. Dr. Thomas McKibbens, pastor/historian writes passionately about the pastor as friend. The Rev. Stacey Sauls, Episcopal Bishop of Lexington, Kentucky, makes a forceful argument for more maturity to be brought to all of the current flash points. Dr. Mitch Carnell, the editor and communication consultant, discusses the importance and power of the words we use as we seek to calm the rhetoric that has done and is doing so much damage. The book is available from the publisher Smyth&Helwys at http://www.helwys.com.
