NCTM President Visits Nashville Schools to Interact with Students

to Prove Math Can Be Challenging—and Relevant!

WHO: Hank Kepner, President, National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM)

WHAT: Kepner will observe and share in teaching a math lesson with Nashville mathematics teachers. During the classroom visits, he will discuss with the students the many uses of math in their daily lives. The NCTM president regularly visits schools around the country to study what students are doing in mathematics and to learn from classroom teachers in different localities. These visits provide valuable information in support of NCTM's national dialogue with policymakers, administrators, and other constituencies committed to high-quality mathematics education.

NCTM President Henry (Hank) Kepner has taught both middle and high school math in Iowa and Wisconsin. He is Professor of Mathematics Education in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics has 100,000 members and 230 Affiliates in the United States and Canada. It is the world's largest organization dedicated to improving mathematics education from pre-K through grade 12. The Council recommends that math education for all students go beyond the basics to include higher levels of mathematics. The Council's Principles and Standards for School Mathematics provides guidelines for excellence in mathematics education. Its Curriculum Focal Points for Prekindergarten through Grade 8 Mathematics, released in 2006, identifies the most important mathematical topics for each grade level. On October 6, NCTM released Focus in High School Mathematics: Reasoning and Sense Making which advocates practical changes to the high school mathematics curriculum to refocus learning on reasoning and sense making.
