Greening Our Leaders

Think about WHY it's smart to go green in the first place. To preserve, protect, conserve, to demonstrate a sense of responsibility and stewardship for the earth - the earth we rely on for so much. "Can't the same be said of our workplace relationships?" says Francie Dalton, a Columbia, Md.-based business coach and author and chief executive officer of Dalton Alliances Inc.

Don't we rely on an entire universe of others to accomplish our professional goals? Don't we need to preserve our clients, our valued vendors? Don't we need to protect our organizations, our reputations, our resources? And isn't it important to career advancement to demonstrate responsibility and a sense of stewardship? Aren't those the traits we want to exhibit as leaders?

Perhaps we should recognize that going green isn't just an environmental concept - but one that recognizes the fundamental need that all living things have for nourishment and nurturing - INLCUDING your boss, your subordinates, your clients, your vendors, and yes, even my fellow hard nosed CEOs out there who would rather DIE than admit they could use a kind word now and then!

The concept of "Going Green" is currently limited to issues of environment, sustainability, and ecology. I suggest that there is yet another issue that should fall under the umbrella of going green: its managerial versatility. Versatility is an essential prerequisite to successfully achieving this "green" quality of leadership. It enables you to construct and communicate messages that resonate with a diverse group of individuals, all of whom are wired differently. Does your management style achieve the same goals and outcomes that the Green Movement does for the environment?
