A new social networking index created by Dialog Consulting Group shows that our collective time dedicated to social networking declined significantly during the "good times" of 2008. However, that trend has now dramatically reversed itself with a record gain in the three-month period ending February 28, 2009. More people are spending more time in social networks indicating that we're getting out less and staying home more.

The full index dating to 1-1-08 can be accessed at: www.get121.biz

The most under-publicized social networking story of 2008 was of the virtual collapse of MySpace. While it started last year as the giant of social networking, a 71% decline in collective time spent on the MySpace pulled down the overall Nelsen Social Networking Index by one-third. The MySpace decline has continued in 2009 with a further 17% decline year-to-date.

However, the same period saw the rise of Facebook, Twitter, Ning, TalkShoe, and many other social networking sites where hundreds of millions of people are now discussing topics minor and major. The economic crisis itself is inspiring conversations across the full spectrum from the personal and mundane to societal and global.

The number of people participating in social networking hit an all-time high in February with growth accelerating dramatically during the past three months (Dec '08 – Feb '09). More new participants visited social networking sites during this period than during the prior eleven months combined (Jan '08 – Nov '08).

The Nelsen Social Networking Index is built from publicly available data about unique visitors and time spent online at a variety of social networking sites. March 2009 results will be available approximately April 10, 2009.
