January 31, 2012 – Washington DC – The Northeast Junior State today announced that it will host its annual Winter Congress Convention on February 3rd – February 5th at the DoubleTree Crystal City Hotel. Over 700 students will be attending from Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts, and other states across the Northeast. The convention will include a Speakers Program from 2:00 – 4:30 on Friday February 3rd at the Capital Hill Visitors Center, a keynote address given by Congressman Barney Frank (D-MA) on Friday at 8:00p.m. at the DoubleTree Cyrstal City Hotel, and a Model Congress event on Saturday February 4th and Sunday February 5th. Students are available for comments and reactions to Frank's speech.
At the Model Congress, students partake in four sessions of debate and discussion over bills, resolutions, and constitutional amendments which they believe the U.S. Congress should pass. Some issues being discussed are the possible repeal of Citizen United, a resolution to condemn China for its human rights abuses, and a bill to promote privatized human space exploration. Students will debate these topics and many others in committee on Saturday, and in full House and Senate debates on Sunday, educating participants in the key issues facing our nation.
The DC Speakers Program will feature five half-hour presentations between 2:00 – 4:30. It will feature Tom Bowden of the Ayn Rand Institute, Congressman Jim Courtney (D-CT), Jim Schier, Chief Architect at NASA, Jennifer Palmieri, Deputy White House Communications Director, and Mahmoud El Hamalawy Producer of Al Jazeera. The Speakers Program is designed to make students more aware of the various aspects of modern politics in the United States.
