Today, the United States, Canada and 27 European countries celebrate Data Privacy Day. This special day is designated to raise awareness and generate discussion about data privacy practices and rights.
In recognition of Data Privacy Day, privacy and information security expert and author, Dr. Joe Campana produced two videos and has written special feature blogs for release during Data Privacy Week. On Monday, Campana released a video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ceCarwYKliQ) to demonstrate how easily Social Security Numbers can be accessed on the Web--especially through public sector Web sites. Social Security Numbers are used by thieves to commit identity fraud. Campana said, "The public needs to be aware of these types of privacy and information security issues. I encourage consumers to go to the Web site that I identified in the video and take action. Consumers can contribute to Data Privacy Day by writing to the officials who allow sensitive information to be accessed on their Web sites and request that they remove the sensitive information" Data Privacy Day also promotes privacy awareness and education among teens. So today Campana is blogging about Teenage Privacy Online. Approximately 55% of American online teenagers have profiles on social networking sites. Parents, their children and teenagers should understand the risks to them, their families and friends when personal information is posted online to be shared with the world. He suggests that adults, employers and employees should also take his online privacy blog to heart. Campana said, "I've seen scandalous, incriminating and inappropriate comments posted by professionals on social networking sites" Recently there was a naïve comment posted by an employee on "Twitter" that may have cost one company the loss of a national account. Five points that everyone—teens and adults should consider before posting any personal information, comments or photographs on the Web include: 1. It is There for the Whole World to See 2. It is There Forever 3. What You Post can Hurt You 4. Protect Your Personal and Family Information 5. Make it a Habit to Read Privacy Notices Campana provides detail on each of these five points in today's Privacy Diary Blog (www.Privacy Diary.com). Data Privacy Day also promotes general awareness education among the public and business community on allied topics such as identity theft, national security, social networking, information security, data destruction and data transfers. Campana says that on Thursday, he plans to release a video on the Privacy Diary blog demonstrating why data encryption is such an important security consideration for laptop users. One laptop is stolen every 53 seconds! He said, "Encryption is one of those misunderstood technologies. I wanted to make a video demonstrating why encryption is the best way to protect sensitive information stored on laptops. Every business, unit of local government, school, not-for-profit, professional and consumer that stores sensitive information on their laptop needs to see this video" Data Privacy Day activities in the United States include corporations, government officials and representatives, academics, and students. Privacy and information security is required of all sectors—private, public and volunteer under numerous state and federal laws. Consumers expect all sectors to safeguard sensitive information they entrust to them. Local governments desire to create a "privacy-friendly" economic climate, where consumers can live, play and conduct business safely with a minimal risk of identity theft or having their right to privacy violated. Campana said that he has been working with the Wisconsin State Senate during the past several weeks to have the state officially recognize Data Privacy Day in Wisconsin. He said he is optimistic that later today the State Senate will pass a resolution recognizing Data Privacy Day in Wisconsin.
