Celebrate Positive Speech
Charleston, SC
Monday, May 26, 2008

` June first is a very special day this year. You can feel the difference in the air. You can hear the difference on the streets. Yes, there is a different atmosphere. June 1, 2008 is the second annual Say something Nice Sunday in churches, homes, restaurants, parks and theatres across the land.

It originated in Charleston, South Carolina with the oldest Baptist church in the South which was founded in Kittery Maine in 1682 and is spreading. It came out of the church's history of respecting all Christians of whatever persuasion proclaimed in the Church Covenant of 1791. The Charleston-Atlantic Presbytery joined in as did the South Carolina Baptist Convention.

Think of the joy on one day when no Christian will say anything bad about another Christian or Christian group or anyone else. It is to be a day of affirmation, a day which celebrates our unity in diversity.

There is nothing to buy, no organization to join, no reason not to participate. Why not use the day to thank all the people who have helped you? Why not give a word of cheer to everyone you meet? Send a note to a long lost friend. Visit someone in the hospital, nursing home or jail. Call up a teacher from your school days and thank him or her. Tell your minister how much he or she means to you.

Rejoice! "This is the day the Lord hath made. Let us rejoice and be glad in it" Use your gift of language to bring light to a world longing to hear good news. Let only positive words flow from your lips on this one day. Who knows? Perhaps if we can manage for one day we can push it to two days or even more. Give it a try!
