Bookviews.com Cites Over 60 New Titles in December
South Orange, NJ
Friday, November 30, 2007

The December edition of Bookviews.com, a monthly report on new fiction and non-fiction, including audiobooks, cites more than 60 books in sections devoted to the editor's "Picks of the Month," history, business, children's and younger readers books and the best new novels.

Edited and written by Alan Caruba, a founding member of the National Book Critics Circle, Bookviews.com has been syndicated to weekly newspapers, a monthly newsletter, and finally a Web site visited by thousands of ardent book lovers.

"There are fewer outlets for book news," says Caruba, "as daily newspapers allocate less space to reviews. Individual books may find their way into newspapers, but more often than not because their authors are making news or because the book fits into a niche category in one of the newspapers sections. Fulltime book reviewers at daily newspapers are an endangered species"

Authors are driven to seek exposure on talk radio and, for the lucky few, on television, says Caruba.

Bookviews has been around since the late 1960s when Caruba was the editor of a weekly newspaper and began reviewing because he loved to read. These days he receives an average of 150 books a month for consideration. "It's quite daunting actually and, regrettably, easily 80 percent of the books I receive do not make it into the monthly report because they may lack merit, look like a thousand other books on the same topic or there is just not enough space and time to include them"

Recently, Caruba announced a ban on self-published books, such as those from iUniverse.com or Xlibris.com. "Many of these books are quite good, but the problem is that there is a virtual flood of self-published books these days and I feel an obligation to the mainstream publishers, large and small, to give them a priority because that is how they and their authors make their living" He admits he will, on occasion, make an exception to his own policy.

The December edition of www.bookviews.com sings the praises of David Andelman's "A Shattered Peace: Versailles 1919 and the Price We Pay Today," that Caruba calls "an outstanding book on a moment in history that determined so much of the conflict and trouble that followed from the ill-conceived treaty that followed World War I" By contrast, he also loved "The Quotable John Wayne: The Grit and Wisdom of an American Icon" Unique among book review outlets, Bookviews.com always devotes space to the best in books for younger readers, suggesting that among the gifts any child or young person should receive are books. "A love of reading is among the greatest gift one can give a child"

More than 15 novels are recommended, along with several audiobook novels one can listen to while commuting or doing other tasks.
