Your Team Doesn't Respect You
 

There's a difference between respect and fear, and most managers confuse the two. You know the type (lord knows I've worked for a few of them myself), the boss who gets instant compliance, whose meetings are silent and efficient, whose team members nod along and then do whatever they want the moment they leave the room.

I spent 17 years in law enforcement, and I watched this dynamic play out constantly. A sergeant who ruled through intimidation would get perfect reports and immediate obedience. But the moment something went wrong, the moment the sergeant wasn't watching, officers would cut corners, hide mistakes, and protect each other instead of the mission. They weren't loyal to the sergeant. They were loyal to each other against the sergeant.

The same thing happens in your organization. If your team moves quickly when you're in the room and slowly when you're not, if they communicate openly with peers but clam up around you, if they celebrate when you go on vacation, you don't have respect. You have compliance born from fear.

Real respect is different. It's built on three things: competence, consistency, and care. Your team respects you when they believe you know what you're doing, when they can predict how you'll respond, and when they know you actually care about them as people, not just as productivity units.

The hard truth? Fear is easier. It's faster to implement. You can create fear in a week. Respect takes months. But fear is also fragile. The moment the threat disappears, the moment you lose power or your team finds another job, the fear evaporates. Respect, on the other hand, is sticky. People who respect you will follow you to the next company, the next industry, the next challenge.

If you want to know which one you have, ask yourself: What happens when I'm not around? If the answer is "nothing changes," you have respect. If the answer is "everything changes," you have fear.
