The unthinkable happened. The free world may just come to an end. Not because the government shut down, but because Pia was voted off of American Idol. Unceremoniously dumped like an eighth grade girl by her upperclassman hottie, Judges Randy, J Lo, and Stephen Tyler each visibly shocked by the news. Because they had no saves left, all they could do was stand in disbelief.

So what can we learn from the unspoken leader being voted off of the planet?

From a communication perspective, your value is decided by your audience not by you. Not by you and not by those who support you. Whether you are the president of the United States or the president of your PTA, YOU DON'T get to decide your value, You don't get to decide how well you do your job. Your audience decides not you.

You have to sweat the small stuff, Richard Carlson wrote the best-seller and continued best selling, Don't Sweat the Small Stuff. As a mere mortal you have to sweat the small stuff. Just make sure it is the right small stuff.

Pia chose a bad outfit . . . for her. I'm sure it looked great on Gwen Stefani, not on Pia. What you wear is small stuff to some, but certainly worth sweating over.

The judges had asked Pia to sing something upbeat. She thought she did. Upbeat is decided by the audience. The only knock you could have on Pia was that her upbeat sounded like her downbeat.

Pia is gone. Gone on to start her new life and find her fame and fortune.

What you can learn is that the audience is always right. And the sun will come up tomorrow.
