The Caring Generation® Talk Radio Are You a Helper or a Caregiver

Golden CO- Caregiving expert, Pamela D. Wilson hosts The Caring Generation radio program for caregivers and aging adults this Wednesday, August 7, 2019, on the Bold Brave Media Global Network. The program airs live at 9 p.m. EST. The Caring Generation® originally aired from 2009 to 2011 on 630 KHOW-AM in Denver, Colorado.

The caregiving topic for this week's program is "Are You a Helper or a Caregiver?" Family members helping loved ones take these actions because of love and a sense of responsibility. Many family members do not realize that they fall into the category of being a caregiver.

Family members will say, "If I knew I was one. I might have a better idea of what to ask. I don't even know what I don't know." Looking back to her family caregiving experience with my parents, who passed away more than 20 years ago, Pamela realizes that she was a caregiver without really knowing that she was a caregiver.

According to Pamela, "I was the youngest of six children who helped my parents before they died. At the time I was working full time, going to college at night, and trying to balance my life." Adult children caring for aging parents find themselves in similar situations when the need to help aging parents takes their life off track.

The number of family caregivers is well documented in research reports. According to Pew Research, there are 40.4 million family caregivers of adults ages 65 and older in the United States. Of this group, 90% are caring for an aging relative. 61% are employed caregivers. The majority of caregivers are caring for an aging parent or a spouse.

Add to this number, persons who are "helping out" who don't view themselves as a caregiver. The number is substantial. Some of the more common tasks that helpers complete are errands, housework, and projects around the house.

Whether a family caregiver sees themselves as a helper who does common tasks or as a caregiver, makes a significant difference in the level of responsibility accepted and the commitment to be proactive. Helpers may not understand the responsibility to help aging parents make care decisions. Helpers may not be prepared to advocate with the healthcare system. A person who self-identifies as a caregiver may take the role and the responsibilities more seriously.

Joining The Caring Generation® radio program is a way for caregivers and aging adults to become comfortable talking about why parents are so stubborn.  Pamela's approach to caregiving is authentic and light-hearted. She believes that the serious subject of caregiving benefits from humor and laughter.

Each week, Caring Generation® radio features a special guest. On August 7th, the guest is Dr. Robert Kellum who will be talking about What Is Making You Sick?
