The Caring Generation® Don't Neglect Your Health

Golden CO- Caregiving expert Pamela D. Wilson hosts The Caring Generation® radio program for caregivers and aging adults this coming Wednesday, April 1st, on the Bold Brave Media Network. The program airs live at 9 p.m. EST. The Caring Generation® aired initially from 2009 to 2011 on 630 KHOW-AM in Denver, Colorado.

Don't Neglect Your Health

On The Caring Generation radio show for caregivers and aging adults this Wednesday evening, April 1st, Pamela D. Wilson talks about the benefits of physical activity and creating a personal wellness plan. Creating a wellness plan is an essential step for caregivers who want to stay healthy and elderly parents who want to remain living in the home.

Sports and Other Injuries Can Limit Physical Activity

A sports injury or an injury in the home, like a fall for an elderly parent, may result in limited physical activity due to pain. Elderly parents who limit activities reduce the ability to perform activities of daily living. These necessary survival skills include bathing, dressing, eating, going to the bathroom, standing, sitting, and walking are activities that we take for granted until we experience an injury or illness.

The guest for this program is Rudy Guerra, from Senteq, who joins talk about sports and other injuries that benefit from the use of an orthopedic brace to support recovery and a return to regular activity. SENTEQ is a family-owned business established in 1987, specializing in medical-grade orthopedic braces that are FDA registered.

How many of you have an achy elbow, wrist, knee, or back that doesn't seem to get better? A brace from Senteq may be part of the solution. Listeners of the Caring Generation® can receive $20 off their order with a special code offered during the live program—limited to the first 50 Senteq callers.

Family Life Sets The Pace

Children learn about health and wellness from the lifestyle examples set by parents. Not all parents are physically active or take an interest in health and well-being. In these situations, if children don't have friends or other role models who practice physical fitness, taking an interest in health and wellness may not happen.

According to Wilson,

"My mother, being sick as early as I can remember and watching her health decline through my teen years, helped me decide I wasn't going to live like her. I joined a gym in my early twenties and have been physically active ever since. Exercise, healthy foods and vitamins are part of my personal wellness routine. I've had sports injuries and recovered. Without being witness to my mother's health issues and early death at the young age of 69, it is unlikely I would have taken steps to investigate health and wellness. I met some of my best friends through physical activities and at the gym."

How to Find Motivation

Motivation is missing from the lives of many Americans to take an active interest in physical activity, health, and well-being. According to an ASPE Research Brief, 48% of people over age 65 eventually receive some type of paid long-term care health support. Twenty-nine percent use in-home care, 5% move into care communities, 28% spend at least 90 days in a nursing home, and 13% live permanently in nursing homes.

These statistics are end game motivations for the idea of don't neglect your health. Few elderly want to be old, sick, and rely on family and others for daily care. Few older adults want to live in a care community or a nursing home

Caregiver Education Provides the "Why" For Wellness Programs

Corporations who offer health and wellness programs without providing caregiving education for employees miss the opportunity to educate about the "why" health and wellness are essential. The frantic pace of trying to maintain a work-life balance eliminates activities that don't pose an immediate benefit. Until health and wellness become relevant, few employees will take action.
