After the terrorist attacks known as 911, at Resume Place, we were inundated immediately with phone calls and emails. These were coming from private sector workers, military, students and every type of jobseeker about looking for help with getting a Federal job. They wanted to work for the FBI, CIA, NSA, etc. to help protect America.

Well, this was a very big question from the beginning – how to write a winning Federal resume and what the best methods were for successfully applying for Federal jobs. Some of us were talking on the phone, but it was a long conversation about HOW to apply for Federal positions on USAJOBS.

I thought quickly and realized that I needed a method to show people how to navigate through Federal job searches and applications from the beginning to the end. I wrote down the steps that I follow when I am coaching first-time job applicants with their Federal job searches.

I created the now popular curriculum, Ten Steps to a Federal Job®. This formula – Ten Steps – is licensed today to employment program counselors and trainers for the military services, states, vocational rehabilitation, non-profits and universities worldwide. It teaches military and non-military how to navigate successfully through the complicated Federal job search – and get hired!

I taught Ten Steps to a Federal Job® the FIRST time ever in 2001 at Montgomery Works in Rockville, MD to about 30 unemployment counselors for the State of Maryland. Before 911, only 5% of their clients were looking for Federal positions (amazing, considering their location near Washington, DC). After 911, the interest in Federal jobs rose to 90% among their clients.

Here are the Ten Steps to a Federal Job®

Step 1. Learn about Federal Jobs
Step 2. Networking
Step 3. Find Jobs on USAJOBS
Step 4. What Are the Keywords
Step 5. What Are the Core Competencies
Step 6. Federal Resume Writing – the Biggest Step of All
Step 7. Questionnaire and Accomplishments
Step 8. Apply for Federal Jobs
Step 9. Track and Follow Up
Step 10. Interview and Negotiate for Your Federal Job

This curriculum is written in my book, Jobseeker’s Guide, 9th Edition.

The Ten Steps to a Federal Job® approach works. It is easy to follow, understand, and takes you from the initial job title through to the interview process and negotiation.

You can follow the Ten Steps to a Federal Job® method to write the correct Outline Format Federal Resume, find the keywords, learn about the questionnaire, write your work accomplishments and navigate through the steps to a secure Federal job with promotion potential.

I am proud to have created a very successful and helpful step-by-step method to navigate a VERY complex job application system. Get the book, follow the steps, write your Outline Format Federal Resume. Bottom Line, hopefully you can receive an offer … and the book teaches you how to negotiate your offer for that Federal job.

Best wishes for your Federal job search!
