Nancy Boyd is not a technical person. By her own cheerful admission, her usual approach to a misbehaving screen is "stern words and hopeful clicking." So the last person anyone expected to design and build twenty interactive software tools was Boyd herself.

Yet that is exactly what the author and consciousness coach — known professionally as "The Soul Mechanic" — has done. Her new collection offers twenty browser-based tools aimed not at the countable concerns most apps address (budgets, schedules, step counts) but at the intangible inner territory technology almost entirely overlooks: truth, grief, self-honesty, and the quiet ways people drift from the lives they actually want.

And because the tools are unlike anything currently on the market, Boyd is taking an unusual step: she's giving one away free, so people can experience firsthand what these tools do.

Why give one away

"These tools are different enough from anything else out there that it's genuinely hard to explain what they do," Boyd says. "You can describe them all day and still not convey it. You really have to feel one work. So rather than keep trying to explain, I decided to just let people try one — no cost, no catch."

The free tool, The Cost of a Wrong Choice, helps a person see, in plain numbers, what a decision they've been avoiding is truly costing them — measured not in dollars, but in hours of their life. Like every tool in the collection, it runs entirely in the user's own browser; nothing entered is transmitted, stored, or shared.

A decade-old problem, an unexpected solution

The collection's centerpiece began with something Boyd had been unable to resolve for more than ten years.

"We are all carrying an enormous amount of grief that was never quite 'ours,'" Boyd says. "The kind that comes from simply witnessing this world — the news that drops you into a chair, the tragedies that happened to strangers and somehow moved into your chest and never left. As a culture, we've mostly agreed not to talk about it. And I've come to believe the world cannot heal until we tend it."

For years, Boyd and colleagues in the coaching field had circled the problem without finding a workable way in. The answer arrived, improbably, in the middle of her unlikely app-building experiment: a quiet, private practice she calls The Tending Room — a held space where a person can meet the weight they've absorbed from witnessing the world, and begin to set it down.

"It's the deepest thing I've ever made," Boyd says, "and the one that most astonished me — because it actually works. The weight really does lighten."

From skeptic to builder

Boyd credits the entire undertaking to a friend, a software engineer with a habit of daring people past their self-imposed limits, who was certain Boyd could build something even when Boyd was certain she couldn't.

What drew Boyd in wasn't a sudden interest in technology, but a single question she couldn't put down: could a tool like this reach the intangible things she works with — the very things no spreadsheet can hold?

"Two things got me through," Boyd says. "One person who believed in me before I believed in myself, and my own refusal to quit when it got hard — and it did get hard. That's exactly what I try to give the people I work with: belief in who they are, and a steady hand while they do the hard work of becoming it."
