Since our convention and your wonderful presentation, I’ve been thinking about something that I feel compelled to tell you about.  You may or may not remember this, but during your presentation you asked anyone who served in the armed forces to stand.  I stood as you led a round of applause for the veterans in the room.

I served during the Vietnam era.  I don’t know if you remember this, but if you were a member of the military at that time, you were not thanked, appreciated or otherwise recognized for putting your life on the line. When I traveled, I often didn’t wear my uniform for fear of being ridiculed.  That day when you asked us all to stand was the first time in my life that I was honored for my service.  It is something that meant a lot to me and for which I will forever be grateful to you.  “People will often not remember what you said, or what you did, but they will always remember how you made them feel.”
