Nothing is quite as aggravating as opening your fridge only to discover that your strawberries have fallen to mold.

The secret is washing them with vinegar.
When you buy your strawberries, prepare a mixture of one part vinegar and ten parts water. Dump the strawberries into the mixture in a bowl and swirl them around. Drain, and rinse them to get rid of that nasty vinegar taste and store them in the fridge.

The reason that vinegar holds the key to fresh strawberries is because the main compound of vinegar (Acetic acid, or CH3OOH) kills any mold and fungal spores that may be lying dormant on the surface of the fruit. They will last almost two weeks without getting soft, nor moldy.
