Jim Masters Interviews Pamela D Wilson Caregiving Expert Series 7

Golden CO- Caregiving expert, Pamela D. Wilson, interviews with CUTV News Radio host Jim Masters on Thursday, July 25th at 1 p.m. EST. The topic of the program is How to Support Family Caregivers.

Family members caring for aging parents and others are growing younger and older. Children and young adults between the ages of 8-25 and millennials aged 23-38 are taking on significant care responsibilities for family members. At the other end of the range are adult children in their 70's who are caregivers for parents in their 90's and older. In the middle are adult children caregivers, elder orphans, and LGBT individuals and partners.

According to Pamela, "I was a caregiver for my mother, who began having health issues when I was in my teens. My mother began to have heart problems that turned into other chronic health conditions. She was a frequent flyer in the doctor's office and hospital emergency rooms. She had quadruple bypass surgery when I was in my early twenties."

When one parent needs help, young children and adults are asked to help with tasks like preparing meals and even bathing. This early help is not viewed as traditional caregiving but simply helping mom help dad—or vice versa. Depending on the situation, there can be long-lasting emotional impacts.

As a result of caregiving responsibilities, child caregivers can experience social withdrawal and difficulties in school. There is also a fear of what happens if or when mom or dad dies.

Millennials and middle-aged caregivers juggle work, their families, attending school, and other priorities with caring for an aging parent or a grandparent. No matter what age we are, caregiving is a challenge.

Add life circumstances of being single never married, or single with a partner, being a widow or a widower with no children and life becomes more complicated. There are also elder orphans – adults with no family -- and LGBT individuals and caregivers. These individuals have to be more proactive to make sure that when care is needed, a plan exists for formal power of attorney, both medical and financial.

Information about how to support family caregivers is on Pamela's website.  "All of my help is Internet-based," says Pamela, "caregivers and aging adults can join from anywhere in the world.  Family caregivers believe they can handle all the issues when the reality is that caregiving responsibilities are more complex than ever imagined."

In her role as medical and financial power of attorney and a care manager, Pamela helped caregivers and aging adults for more than 20 years on a 24/7 basis. She has seen the best and the worst of caregiving and helps families avoid unexpected and unfortunate care situations. Her goal is to reach 1 million caregivers worldwide to spread hope, help, and support.
